ASML Posts a Record Quarter
as AI Demand Outruns Supply
A record quarter on EUR 11.7 billion of net sales and EUR 5.0 billion of net income, with customers asking to place orders for 2029 and even 2030 while planned supply falls short.Oct 16, 2026
ASML's third quarter of 2026 was a record: €11.7 billion in net sales, a 57.5% gross margin and €5.0 billion of net income. Customers are expressing interest in orders for 2029 and even 2030, and the company states plainly that its planned 2027 and 2028 supply will not fully meet demand. This is the demand side of AI investment, read from the primary source.

1. The quarter in numbersVerified
The release is dated October 14, 2026, from Veldhoven in the Netherlands. Quarter on quarter: Source: ASML
| Item (EUR millions unless noted) | Q2 2026 | Q3 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Total net sales | 9,326 | 11,662 |
| of which Installed Base Management sales | 2,762 | 3,289 |
| New lithography systems sold (units) | 86 | 113 |
| Used lithography systems sold (units) | 5 | 8 |
| Gross profit | 5,035 | 6,700 |
| Gross margin | 54.0% | 57.5% |
| Net income | 2,918 | 4,960 |
| EPS (basic, EUR) | 7.59 | 12.95 |
| End-quarter cash, equivalents and short-term investments | 7,582 | 12,735 |
The gross margin moved from 54.0% to 57.5% because Installed Base Management sales — service and field-option revenue — came in at €3.3 billion, above guidance, on strong demand for productivity upgrades. The release notes that it contains inside information within the meaning of Article 7(1) of the EU Market Abuse Regulation.
2. Demand visibility, and the supply paradoxVerified
The most informative part of the quarter is the CEO's commentary.
— Christophe Fouquet, President and CEO, ASML
Customers keep raising their short- and medium-term equipment forecasts, and the stated driver is their own view of how large and how long AI-related investment will be. On the strength of that visibility, some are asking about orders for 2029 and 2030.
— Christophe Fouquet, President and CEO, ASML
Order-book momentum is rising each quarter this year, yet planned supply for 2027 and 2028 will not cover customer demand, so the company is looking at capacity increases for 2028 beyond the previously communicated 30%. Lithography tools have long lead times and capacity decisions must be taken years ahead — which is precisely why that sentence implies demand is visible years out.
3. Q4 and full-year guidanceVendor-reported
| Item | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Q4 2026 total net sales | €14.2-15.2 billion |
| Q4 2026 gross margin | around 57% |
| Q4 2026 R&D / SG&A costs | around €1.2 billion / €0.4 billion |
| Full-year 2026 total net sales | €44-45 billion |
| Full-year 2026 gross margin | around 56% |
The midpoint of Q4 guidance (€14.7 billion) steps up again from Q3. A full year of €44-45 billion, on top of an €11.7 billion quarter, is what makes this look like structural demand rather than a spike.
4. Returns to shareholdersVerified
- Around €4.1 billion of shares were repurchased in Q3 under the 2026-2028 buyback programme.
- An interim dividend for 2026 of €1.88 per ordinary share is payable on November 4, 2026.
- Company background from the release: more than 45,500 employees (FTE), headquartered in Veldhoven, traded on Euronext Amsterdam and NASDAQ under the symbol ASML.

The October 14 call filled in the quarter's composition and the shape of what follows. Source: The Motley Fool (full transcript)
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Net system sales | €8.4 billion (EUV €4.1 billion including 1 High-NA EUV system; non-EUV €4.3 billion) |
| Mix | Logic 54% / memory 46% |
| Composition of €5.0 billion net income | Includes roughly €500 million from a valuation increase on the company's investment in Mistral AI |
| Free cash flow | €11.4 billion, including customer down payments |
| Full-year growth | +36% year over year (€44-45 billion) |
| Memory / logic | Memory net system sales expected +75% for the year; logic +10%, with advanced logic above +25% |
| Low-NA EUV output | 65 systems in 2026, up from 44 last year — nearly a 50% increase |
| China | 20% of total net sales for the full year |
| Pricing | Increases already implemented on the most critical products, contributing from 2027 and at full effect in 2028 |
| Products | NXE:3800F at 260 wafers per hour (small-quantity introduction early 2027), next-generation DUV immersion at 330 wafers per hour from 2027, YieldStar 550B metrology at 60% greater productivity |
| High-NA EUV | One system sold in Q3. Intel has exposed more than 1 million wafers with performance meeting or exceeding low-NA EUV. A joint initiative with TSMC targets 12-inch EUV photomasks and a pilot line by 2031 |
Three things are worth holding onto. (1) Part of the profit is one-off — the €5.0 billion includes roughly €500 million from the Mistral AI valuation. (2) Demand is broadening into memory — memory net system sales are expected up 75% for the year on EUV adoption at advanced DRAM nodes. (3) Price increases land from 2027 — the cost of the ramp and repricing of critical products show up in margin from next year.
The company also names its own risks. The CFO said the fixed-cost coverage you would expect from higher volume is "a little bit compensated and a bit more compensated by the extra cost that we incur in the ramp," while the CEO warned that although customer cleanroom availability is not currently a constraint, customers must execute 2027-2028 construction carefully or tool installations will slip tactically. That is the flip side of demand being visible years out.
One clarification on volume: the quarter's lithography systems were 113 new plus 8 used — 121 units in total.
6. What it adds up toAIfrontier view
AI investment debates cluster on model capability and API prices; this earnings report describes the physical demand underneath them. The number that matters is not the revenue line but the note that customers are asking about orders for 2029 and 2030. That is evidence AI-related capital spending is being planned as a multi-year equipment cycle rather than a couple of quarters of enthusiasm.
Equally important, the company itself says planned supply will not cover 2027-2028 demand. Capacity is a decision measured in years, and the shortfall shows up as price and lead time. Constraints at the toolmaker eventually propagate upward into compute constraints on model development.
The risks are the obvious ones: export controls and geopolitics (which the company lists in its own filings), customers changing plans or delaying and cancelling orders, and supply-chain limits on parts. Tool orders lag model announcements, but as a read on real demand they are among the hardest indicators available.
